Fabulous Florida travel destinations from Jill Podehl

Jill Podehl Florida travel tours 2024: One winter some years back, officials at Florida Power & Light’s facility just north of West Palm Beach began noticing that manatees were congregating around the facility’s warm-water outflow, and the idea for Manatee Lagoon was born. Today, Manatee Lagoon is one of the best places to visit in Florida to see these gentle 1,500- to 2,000-pound creatures. Manatees love people. If they see you on a dock, they’ll swim right up and have even been known to roll over in the water, so people can pat their bellies. On the endangered list for many years, they’re now making a comeback, and today some 6,000 manatees are known to inhabit the waters around the state, more than almost any other place in the world. As a result, there’s even talk of removing them from the endangered species list. Manatee Lagoon’s Discovery Center features imaginative hands-on exhibits, observation areas, a manatee webcam, and an outdoor deck at which the manatees congregate, especially in winter. The star of the show is Mia, whose travels and interactions with other sea cows you can track. Find extra info on https://www.quora.com/profile/Jill-Podehl.

South Beach is an absolutely iconic, very much beloved beach in Miami. It’s also famous across the country, making it one of the most beautiful landmarks in the USA. South Beach covers a whopping 15 or so city blocks of space, stretching across a large part of Miami. It’s free to access and can be visited from many different parts of the city. Given the size of South Beach, there’s plenty of space to rest, relax, or enjoy the sun and surf. Kiosks line the beach’s entire length, providing rentable items like umbrellas and lounge chairs. Snack bars and stalls offer knickknacks, food, and drinks in case you need anything. If you have more money to spend, many hotels along the stretch have special, private parts of the beach too!

When you think of Miami chances are you think of a sandy beach with the sun shining. Miami Beach is the best area in Miami for soaking up some rays on a sandy beach and it is something of a legend in the city. The beach itself technically outside of the Miami municipality as it is located on an island. Aside from the beaches, the area is also known for its Art Deco district and the odd but beautiful buildings within. But to truly enjoy a vacation you also need a nice place to stay.

Do you want to bath in the sun ? Miami is a fabulous location to relax. What can you see in Miami? Everglades National Park, just a short drive from Miami, protects one of Florida’s most unique natural features. These swamplands, covering about 1.5 million acres, are home to alligators, crocodiles, snakes, and all kinds of birds. This whole area is essentially a shallow river flowing out to the ocean. Within the park is an informative Visitors Center, as well as walking trails and boardwalks for wildlife viewing. One of the most enjoyable ways for tourists to experience the Everglades is on an airboat tour. These high-speed boat trips take visitors out into the marshes and streams to see alligators and other wildlife. There are several operators in the area, but outside the park, that offer tours of the Everglades.

Jill Podehl Florida travel attractions right now: Key Biscayne holds popular tourist attractions, busy recreational marinas and fantastic beaches. Windsurfing and sailing are foremost along its windy causeway, known as Hobie Beach. Miami Seaquarium ranks as one of Florida’s first marine attractions, but keeps up-to-date with dolphin interaction programs and environmentally inclined exhibits. Nearby marinas offer everything from boat rentals to diving excursions. There are more ways to play at Crandon Park, a huge beach park with amusement rides, tennis and bike paths. At the island’s southern tip, a state park protects a historic lighthouse and the beach that fronts it.

New owners William Edgemon and Raymond Moss saw the potential in their purchase and spent the equivalent of 20 million dollars to move the whole structure and rebuilt it in the northern area of Miami. Its life didn’t begin here in Miami, Florida, though – it started out as a building in Spain that served as the living quarters of Cistercian monks, keeping up this purpose for over 700 years. It would fall out of this use after being seized by a revolutionary movement, which repurposed it into a stable and granary. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper magnate, was so impressed by the sheer beauty and wonder of the monastery that he decided to completely purchase it. Each part of it was broken apart into individual stones, packaged into over 11,000 boxes, and sent to Brooklyn, New York. Discover extra information at Jill Podehl.

The great outdoors offers its own myriad of fun possibilities. Get out on the water to experience Greater Miami from a different perspective aboard an airboat tour in the Everglades or on a Millionaire’s Row cruise through Biscayne Bay aboard the Island Queen. Or, you can simply rent a paddleboard or kayak and experience the unique aquatic ecosystems up close. You’ll never run out of things to do in Miami, no matter what tickles your fancy, how much you have to spend, and who you’re traveling with.

Essential alpaca experiences and holiday advices in Denver, Colorado

Colorado alpaca experiences today: Alpacas are low-maintenance animals that require minimal housing needs and lower veterinary bills than many other types of livestock. They graze, not pull, plants down to the roots, so they help maintain pastures and reduce the need for supplemental feeding. Their padded feet cause less wear and tear on the ground than a horse’s hooves, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional livestock. Shearing and processing the fiber is a huge source of income for alpaca ranchers. They sell raw alpaca fiber to groups that turn it into finished goods and participate in local and national alpaca shows. They may also stud their females (female herd sires) with other alpaca owners for a fee. Find more details at alpaca adventure tours in Colorado.

As with any type of farm, the profitability of an alpaca operation is highly dependent on a number of factors. The quality, color, and sex of the herd and the strength of the overall industry can all impact income results. It is also important for new farm owners to engage an accountant for assistance with setting up bookkeeping systems and determining tax returns. When considering buying a herd of alpacas, consider the total cost of ownership. In addition to purchasing the herd, you’ll need to invest in a barn, fencing, irrigation, and fertilizing equipment. You’ll also need to have a plan for shearing, which can be a big-ticket item and is typically held annually. Lastly, there is the labor and investment of attending shows and promoting the herd to potential buyers.

Still, you should always remember to treat alpacas with space and respect. Alpacas don’t like being grabbed or held, and they are often particularly sensitive to being touched on the head. Instead, allow them to approach you at their own pace. This often results in a much more rewarding and affectionate response. If you’re looking for an age-appropriate experience for the entire family, you’ve met your match. Interacting with alpacas is safe for everyone from little kids to elderly members of your crew. There are no age restrictions — kids 2 and under are free.

As herbivores, alpacas only eat vegetation. They eat mostly grass, but their diets can also include leaves wood, bark or stems. Like other ruminants, alpacas have a three-chambered stomach that digests the roughage efficiently. Unlike other grazers, alpacas don’t eat much. According to the Alpaca Owners Association, a 125-lb. (57 kg) animal only eats around 2 lbs. (907 grams) per day. In general, alpacas eat 1.5 percent of their body weight each day.

It’s a photo-worthy activity: If you’re looking for a fun experience where you can take some Instagram-worthy shots, meeting alpacas is for you. You’ll be able to stand with them, pet them, feed them, and take photos with and of them. Not only are you interacting with an animal you’ve likely never hung out with before, but you’re also doing it in an incredibly scenic state. Capture some photos of you smiling with an alpaca for all your followers and friends to enjoy. When you go behind the scenes on the ranch, you learn about much more than just the animals. You have the opportunity to talk about the economy, trade, production, local handmade goods, and so much more.

Are alpacas an “exotic species,” or are they considered simply “livestock?” Alpacas have been raised as domestic livestock for thousands of years. Since the end-product of alpacas is their fleece, like sheep, they are classified as livestock by both the United States and Canadian federal governments. Do alpacas spit? All members of the camel family use spitting as a means of negative communication. They do get possessive around food, and may express annoyance by spitting at other alpacas that they perceive are encroaching on “their” food. Also, they often spit at one another during squabbles within the herd (usually involving two or more males). From time to time alpacas do spit at people on purpose, but it is more common that humans get caught in the crossfire between alpacas, so it’s best to study their behavior and learn to avoid the most vulnerable situations. Discover additional details at https://meetalpacas.com/.

Is it OK to have just one alpaca? No. Alpacas have very strong herd instincts and need the companionship of other alpacas to thrive, preferably three or more. Alpacas are livestock, and should not be treated as house pets. Alpacas should be kept with their own sex with a few exceptions. One exception is that male crias need to be kept with their mothers until weaning. Gelded males should not be housed together with females, as they can repeatedly attempt to breed the females. This can lead to serious health consequences for the females.

What do I need by way of shelter and fencing? Shelter requirements vary depending on the weather and predators in the area. As a rule, alpacas need at least a three-sided open shelter where they can escape from the heat of the sun in summer and from icy wind and snow in winter. Alpacas appreciate good ventilation, and owners have found that large overhangs outside of the shelter are used more often than an enclosed barn. In general, fencing construction and design is dictated by the threat of local predators. Also, fence openings need to be the correct size for alpacas to prevent injury from entangling their neck and limbs.

The main difference between the breeds is the length and fineness of the wool-like fiber, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The Suri have very long fibers (“silky dreadlocks,” according to Alpaca Ventures), while the Huacaya have a more compact “crimpy” fleece, with shorter fibers. Guanacos are slightly larger than alpacas and much larger than vicuñas, but they are smaller and less heavily built than llamas, according to the University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web (ADW). Alpacas are the smallest members of the camel family. The average height at the shoulder is 3 feet (91.4 centimeters), according to Switzer. They are 4 to 7 feet (120 to 225 cm) long and weigh 121 to 143 lbs. (55 to 65 kilograms). By comparison, the llama stands almost 4 feet (1.2 m) at the shoulder and weighs from 286 to 341 lbs. (130 to 155 kg). Camels grow to 6.5 feet (2 m) and weigh from 880 to 1,325 lbs. (400 to 600 kg), according to the San Diego Zoo.

Keeping alpacas comfortable is essential, so you’ll want to ensure that their indoor living spaces are well-ventilated. They need to be able to stay cool in the summer, as sustained heat and humidity can lead to dehydration and other problems. You’ll also need to make sure they have access to clean water throughout the year. You might provide a water misting fan, use water coolers in the barn, or have a pond or kiddie pool for them to bathe in when needed. These simple things help to keep your alpacas healthy and happy.

Are you planning a trip to the Mile High City? Most people pack their itinerary with a Colorado Rockies baseball game, a concert at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, and a hike at Rocky Mountain National Park in addition to all of Denver’s museums and botanical gardens. Yet, if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure, you can’t miss an alpaca experience. Over the last several decades, Denver has become home to these gorgeous animals because Colorado’s arid climate mimics that of their native habitat.

Alpacas breed once a year, and as livestock they are often induced to breed at any time. The female alpaca has a gestation period of 242 to 345 days and gives birth to just one offspring. The birthing process can take up to seven hours, according to National Geographic (opens in new tab). The baby alpaca, called a cria, weighs 18 to 20 lbs. (8 to 9 kg) when it is born. The cria is weaned at 6 to 8 months, and females are ready to reproduce at 12 to 15 months. Males take a bit longer to mature and are ready to mate at 30 to 36 months. Alpacas live up to 20 years.

All members of your group will have the opportunity to participate in a fully interactive experience. It typically lasts around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Its environment is ideal for nature lovers : Most people who live in Colorado love the outdoors because the state offers a little bit of everything. Even if you’re just visiting for the weekend, you can embrace all that nature has to offer. An alpaca ranch offers stunning scenery and a relaxing atmosphere where you can take in the fresh air. Are you looking for an educational opportunity for your kids? Come enjoy an alpaca experience that’s not only fun but also informative. This alpaca experience takes place on a fiber farm. This type of farm raises animals like alpacas, sheep, goats, llamas, angora rabbits, and more for their fleece and wool.

The alpaca comes in two breed types: huacaya (pronounced wuh-KAI-ya) and suri (SUR-ee). Huacayas, the more common type, account for about 85-90% of all alpacas. The two breed types vary primarily in terms of their fiber. How long do alpacas live? Generally, around 15 to 20 years. The longest documented lifespan of an alpaca is 28 years. How are alpacas different from llamas? People often confuse alpacas with llamas. While closely related, llamas and alpacas are very different animals. Llamas are much larger, about twice the size of an alpaca, with a weight range of 250 to 450 pounds. Alpacas weigh between 120 to 200 pounds. Llamas are primarily used for packing or for guarding herds of sheep or alpacas, whereas alpacas are primarily raised for their soft and luxurious fleece. Find even more info on meetalpacas.com.

Are alpacas easy to care for? Alpacas are a small and relatively easy livestock to maintain. They stand about 36′ high at the withers (where the neck and spine come together) and weigh between 120 to 200 pounds. Like other types of livestock, alpacas need basic shelter and protection from heat and foul weather. Good nutrition is essential for healthy animals. Hay, minerals, and fresh clean water should be available at all times. Many alpaca owners also provide a nutritional supplement. Under a veterinarian’s direction, alpacas need vaccinations, preventive medication, and deworming. Alpacas also require yearly shearing to keep them cool in the summer. Alpacas do not have hooves; instead they have two toes, with hard toenails on top and a soft pad on the bottom of their feet. Their padded feet minimize the impact on the pasture. To ensure proper foot alignment and comfort, their toenails must be trimmed as needed.

So what do you DO with these animals? Alpacas are raised for their soft and luxurious fleece (fiber). Each shearing produces roughly five to ten pounds of fleece per animal, per year. This fleece, often compared to cashmere, can be turned into a wide array of products from yarn and apparel to tapestries and blankets. The fleece itself is recognized globally for its fineness, softness, light weight, durability, excellent thermal qualities, and luster.

Wild guanacos and vicuñas live in a wide range of habitats, from the high and dry Atacama Desert in northern Chile to the wet and stormy Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of the continent, according to the ADW. Alpacas are also native to the Andes, at elevations of up to 15,750 feet (4,800 meters). Alpacas, however, are very adaptable and have been exported all over the world, including the United States, New Zealand, Australia and the Netherlands, so their “habitat” is often farmland. Still, 99 percent of the world population of alpacas is found in South America, according to the ADW.

Understanding the economics of alpaca farming before investing in these animals is important. It is also a good idea to engage an accountant or tax specialist for guidance in setting up bookkeeping systems and determining the appropriate deductibles and allowances to apply to your particular situation. Alpacas are herd animals, and they thrive in social environments. They are primarily herbivores and subsist on a diet of grasses and hay, so pasture management is an important part of their overall well-being. Regular health checkups, vaccinations, and shearing are other important aspects of their overall care.

Do alpacas make noise? Alpacas are very quiet, docile animals that make a minimal amount of sound. They do make a humming sound as a means of communication or to express concern or stress. Most communication between alpacas is nonverbal. Occasionally you will hear a shrill “alarm call,” which usually means they have spotted something of concern nearby, and they are warning others in the herd. The concern may be a predator, or may be something they are not familiar with, like a cow or horse in a neighboring field. Male alpacas also “serenade” females during breeding with a guttural, throaty sound called “orgling.” See even more info at https://meetalpacas.com/.

Are alpacas dangerous? No. Alpacas are pleasant to be around and generally easy to handle. Alpacas do not head-butt. They do not have horns or hooves like other livestock. They move gracefully and adroitly about the field and are therefore unlikely to run into or over anyone intentionally. Males develop sharp fighting teeth at about three years of age which can cause injury to both humans as well as other alpacas. Alpacas will reflexively kick with a hind leg, particularly if surprised from behind. While the impact of an alpaca kick is not on par with a horse, it can create a bruise. Also, there is potential for toenails to cut skin.

Alpacas have two sets of teeth for processing food. They have molars in the back of the jaw for chewing cud. In the front, alpacas have teeth on the bottom only and a hard gum (known as a dental pad) on the top for crushing grain, grass, or hay. Unlike goats and sheep that have long tongues which can rip plants out of the ground, alpacas have short tongues and nibble only the tops of grasses and other plants. This results in less disturbance of the vegetation. Alpacas will often eat shrubs or the leaves from trees if given the opportunity. This requires monitoring to ensure they do not consume harmful products.

Adorable, docile and soft, alpacas are prized as pets and cattle around the world. There are no wild alpacas. Alpacas are domesticated versions of vicuñas, South American ruminants that live high in the Andes. Alpacas are related to llamas, which are domesticated versions of another wild Andean ruminant, the guanaco. While llamas are used as pack animals, alpacas are raised mainly for their soft wool. Guanacos and vicuñas are found throughout the Andes Mountains. They are descended from camelids that developed in North America and migrated to South America 3 million years ago, according to Phil Switzer, an alpaca breeder based in Colorado. These animals evolved into guanacos and vicuñas, and about 6,000 years ago, people in the Andes began to domesticate them. There are two breeds of alpaca, the Huacaya and the Suri. Huacaya alpacas are more common, according to Switzer.

Dancing samba involves a lot of hip mobility with some level of control on the fluidity of the hip joint. As you keep moving back and forth and sideways, you get to train yourself on how to move your hip joint safely and yet effectively. And with better control over your hip movement, you get better movement in many other ways. Dancers have to look graceful and elegant while on the dance floor. But to achieve this, you will need to master the proper body alignments depending on your body type and the kind of dance you are engaging in. For samba, confidence is key and this means you will have to learn how to look confident. A confident body alignment is actually the proper body posture where your head is held high and your shoulders look firm.

Passistas – Carnival’s leading samba dancers – They are usually on the sound truck behind the percussionists or find their way marching along with the school down the runway. One of the most important elements in the samba school parade is the rhythm and the lyrics of the theme song. The song must energize the dancers and the audience generating an intense desire to dance. The song must be related to the chosen theme and this theme should also be represented in the costumes, floats, and wings. This wing is dedicated exclusively to those women who have toiled for many years preparing their samba school for Carnival after Carnival. It is a way for the younger generations to show their appreciation for all the love and support these wonderful ladies have given to their samba school.

Towering over the city with its welcoming arms, the Christ the Redeemer statue is the iconic symbol of Rio de Janeiro and it’s something you must visit while you’re here. Set atop 709 meter-high Corcovado Mountain, this monument has been watching over the city for nearly 100 years. Views from the deck below the 30-meter-high monument out over the city, ocean, and surrounding mountains are incredible on a clear day. For the famous shot of yourself in front of the statue, walk about halfway down the stairs to the lower deck and shoot backward towards the statue. Visiting Christ the Redeemer isn’t all about views and selfies, the ride up to the top on the incline railway is half the fun. Ascending through the lush jungle, the steep ride to the top takes about 20 minutes and provides beautiful views.

The most spectacular events are the parades of the samba schools, which are held in a unique venue designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The Sambódromo is a long parade route lined by stadium-style boxes designed so that up to 90,000 spectators can watch the parades of brilliantly costumed dancers as they compete. The parade route is 700 meters long and 13 meters wide. It was first used in 1984 and updated as a venue for the 2016 Olympic Games. A fun distraction when visiting Rio is the Selaraón Steps. Colorful stairs wind their way up a steep incline, each decorated with an assortment of tiles. Work on the stairs began in 1983 by Jorge Selearón, who collected tile castoffs and affixed them to the dilapidated staircase running outside his home. Until his suspicious death in 2013, the somewhat eccentric artist kept adding, replacing, and repairing the tiles on stairs in the colors of the Brazilian flag and the tiles on the edges of the staircase in red.

Choreography at its best! Each samba school presents a theme which is portrayed by a team of musicians, samba dancers, and well-decorated floats. Months of preparation are put in by the samba schools who mobilize the support of thousands of locals from their communities. At the forefront of the preparations is the Carnvalesco or Carnival Director who sets the theme and organizes practically everything required for the parade right from the costume designs, decorations, theme song, and much more. For the samba parade, each school is divided into sections called ‘alas’ or wings, with each wing consisting of 100 members or more wearing the same costume. In some samba schools, each wing will choreograph their own dance that they practice for months prior to the Carnival. While the dance does contribute to the overall score, the dancers must be upbeat, and happy and sing their samba school song throughout the parade.
